This is the first of what I hope to be many guest blogs.  This one was written by Michelle Kilgore of “The Picky Nibbler“.  Kim and I have known Michelle for many years and she may enjoy food more than we do.  We really hope you enjoy this new feature and look forward to your comments!

How many times do I need to learn the lesson that EVERYDAY is a “special occasion” and a reason to celebrate? Two years ago I was on a flight from Chicago to Orange County and was seated next to a woman from Laguna Beach. I don’t usually talk to people on planes but we started chatting about food and places to eat and before I knew it we were already landing (you know the saying – “time flies…” and quite literally in this case!). She told me that her very favorite place to eat in Orange County is a place called The Ramos House Café in San Juan Capistrano.

I had never heard of it before but typed it into my blackberry list of “Places to Eat.” She told me it was a little on the pricey side but nice for a special occasion and totally worth it.  I’ve been waiting for a “special occasion” ever since then.  Finally a friend and I went for my birthday. Oh how I wish I hadn’t wasted so much time “waiting” for a special occasion. Ramos House Café is a delectable treat that should be enjoyed as often as possible for no particular reason at all.

The atmosphere and ambience is friendly and inviting from the moment you walk through their wooden gate.  You’ll wish you could live in that attached house right along with the owner.

Hot Cocoa with Caramelized Marshmallow

A caramelized marshmallow bobbing in your hot cocoa is an unexpected treat and so delicious that my friend ordered one in her coffee!


Flaky, buttery biscuits melt on your tongue just like a freshly fallen snowflake but taste much, much better since they are 99% butter (or at least taste like it).

Cinnamon Apple Beignets

The Apple cinnamon beignets look a little too golden brown and done on the outside as the servers keep bringing them out of the kitchen – plate after plate after plate, but do not be deceived by appearances… These bite size beauties dissolve in your mouth the moment they pass your lips.

Crostini with White Bean Curd

Don’t be afraid to ask for a 4th crostini since this dish only comes with 3… and with such a generous helping of the most flavorful white bean spread with truffle oil you’ll definitely want a 4th. Besides, no one likes fighting over a starter. Though you may be tempted to quickly eat all the parmesan flakes before your companion can since they are THAT good.

Smoked Bacon Scramble w/ Wilted Rocket & Apple Fried Potatoes

Reminiscent of the leaning Tower of Pisa the apple fried potatoes beautifully support eggs scrambled to perfection and a bed of arugula on TOP instead of underneath. So clever…

Sweet Potato Infused Pain Perdu

This sweet potato infused pain perdu (aka French toast) was like Emeril’s bread pudding falling in love with your grandma’s thanksgiving sweet potatoes – a match made in heaven. And you’ll think you’ve gone to heaven after trying your first bite!

So if you haven’t learned the lesson already, or need to learn it one more time – Every day is a special occasion and a reason to celebrate!
